I picked up this book on a Friday night, and could not out it down. I spent all shabbos reading it, finishing it by havdalah. As a biography, it is great, as a lesson in how to live your life, it is awesome. I would highly recommend to all.
The story of Rabbi Perr and his battle to promote Yiddishkeit is very inspiring! Would have liked to also read about his Rebbitzin!
A very rare book. It rings as true and it isn't shallow. It made me smile.
Technically this is not a review of the book because I just learned of its existence, and ordered it, today. But I wanted to say that as someone who was privileged to study under the late Menachem Perr, in the Hebrew School of Congregation Sons of Israel in South Ozone Park, he was a giant, a man among men. The funny thing is, he probably would not be happy with us saying the wonderful things we are saying about him, because he never felt himself worthy. The best way to make him uncomfortable would be to compliment him in any way. But he was a very special and unique person. He totally understood, lived, and embodied all the goodness in Judaism, and in people. He was the most humble of people, and the greatest of people, and lived what he believed. It is fascinating that his final career choice was to be the humble leader of a tiny congregation on the frontier of Judaism, where just being a Jew, any kind of Jew, was tough. For all of us, he was a beacon of light and goodness.We Hebrew School students had warm recollections of Yechiel, and looked forward to his visits with us. He learned his father's lessons well, and I am thrilled that he has shared this book with us.I cannot wait to learn more than the few scraps I do know of Rabbi Perr's path to South Ozone Park, since talking about himself was one thing Rabbi Perr would never do.
The Perr family legacy is greatness in simplicity. The life and lessons of Rabbi Menachem M. Perr deserves an even longer biography. We can only hope future editions include more material, including his Torah thoughts, his approach to prayer. Well written, with wit and wisdom, Tzidkus Stands Forever delights. Rabbi Perr, z'l, a student of gedolim, represents authentic Torah Judaism at its best. This book is of interest to every sincere ben Torah and anyone who loves Jews. There are many biographies out there of great Jewish leaders and I enjoy them as much the next person. However, never before have I felt so invigorated after reading one. I was moved, inspired, and enlightened by Rabbi Perr's enthralling narrative. As I turned the last page, I felt as if I had gotten to know a real individual, not a character from some story. The scene at the end with Rabbi Perr looking out at the sea was especially moving to me. You will not read another "Gadol" book like this. Highly recommended. My only criticism is that it is too short. We need some more books from this author!
